Designing Luz Roja: A Cultural Canvas by Haus of Powell

In the heart of downtown San Antonio, where heritage and hospitality collide, a new dining destination has emerged with bold energy and thoughtful elegance. Luz Roja Fresh Mex Cocina y Cantina, situated on the city’s iconic River Walk, brings warmth, tradition, and modern sophistication together under one roof.
This transformative project was brought to life by the award-winning interior design studio Haus of Powell, led by Principal Designer Kristal, in collaboration with Lead Interior Designer Michaela Padruno. Michaela's vision shaped a vibrant and layered space that captures the soul of Mexican artistry while elevating the guest experience through design.
Where Culture Meets Contemporary Dining
The heart of Luz Roja lies in its storytelling—woven through color, material, and spatial flow. The design concept was rooted in traditional Mexican motifs and textures, but reimagined for a contemporary setting where locals and travelers could gather in comfort and style.
A defining feature of the space is the custom ceiling mural, hand-selected and conceptualized by the design team, acting as a suspended work of art that guides guests visually through the restaurant. This focal point, paired with rich wall treatments, curated vintage artwork, and layered lighting, sets the tone from the moment you walk in.
Navigating the Challenges of Design Execution
As is often the case in commercial design, the process from concept to construction included its share of adjustments. While the original plan featured a dramatic backlit quartz waterfall bar, this element was ultimately not executed by the client due to changing priorities during the build.
Rather than compromise the integrity of the design, the Haus of Powell team pivoted creatively—leaning into other dramatic focal points like custom tile applications, dimensional wall sconces, and the vibrant mural ceiling. These features preserved the energy and authenticity of the space while staying true to the original design intent.
“Design is about storytelling—but it’s also about adaptability,” shared Kristal. “You may not always get every piece installed as envisioned, but the job of a great design team is to maintain the emotional thread throughout.”
Crafting the Guest Experience Through Design
From the warm walls to the moody ceiling tones, every color and texture was selected with intention. Pendant lighting over hightops, vintage Mexican art walls, and a curated selection of seating—ranging from upholstered booths to cocktail tables—ensure the restaurant can shift effortlessly from casual brunch to moody evening gathering.
Even the restrooms were treated as part of the overall experience, with thoughtful details like Talavera vessel sinks & wall-mounted faucets contributing to the restaurant's elevated, culturally rich ambiance.
Design With Purpose & Personality
The outdoor patio layout, bar integration, and flexible dining plans were all created to not only honor the lively spirit of Mexican dining culture but also ensure operational flow for the restaurant team. Durable, high-quality finishes were paired with eco-conscious features like LED lighting, low-VOC paints, and repurposed materials, underscoring the team's commitment to beauty with a conscience.
A Haus of Powell Signature
Luz Roja is a glowing example of what Haus of Powell does best—bridging cultural inspiration with modern luxury, always grounded in purpose and personality. Michaela’s detailed design execution, the project captures a dynamic blend of warmth, art, and hospitality that feels undeniably San Antonio.
For anyone stepping into Luz Roja, the experience is more than just a meal—it’s a carefully orchestrated atmosphere that celebrates color, culture, and craft.
